Brick Industry Association (BIA) Reveals Emerging Brick Trends For 2021

Brick Industry Association (BIA) member manufacturers have reported in on fresh trends emerging in residential and commercial applications in 2021 trends for residential and commercial exteriors and interiors.

On the residential side, top new home color preferences include whites, off-whites, white blends, grays, dark neutrals and timeless earth tones. Fast growing trends also include painted brick exteriors, primarily in whites, and Romabio Limewash to “paint” brick in a safer way than using a traditional paint. Design expression includes varying patterns in the gables.

Home trends also include a pandemic-inspired demand for outdoor entertainment and living areas. Paver trends also emphasize light colors.

Interior residential thin brick applications that add natural texture and dress up living spaces are also growing, including smeared mortar and mortar wash looks. Design elements also include extending exterior brick colors and textures inside the home through interior thin brick.

“Clay brick can achieve any trend through virtually unlimited design options, textures and colors that do not fade or need to be replaced,” said Ray Leonhard, BIA president and CEO. On the commercial side, top colors show surging blacks—especially gloss finishes—hot whites, grays, whites with dark accents and browns with range.

Commercial design trends include thoughtfully placed negative space as a key role of functionality; heavy textured/cut and roll back brick with character; timeless traditional design; herringbone accents and interior open spaces with sharp lines, raw materials and a monochromatic color palette.

Additional commercial design trends include brick laid in a running bond but all in a soldier course and pulling courses to increase wall depth.

Commercial brick paver design redefines public spaces through patterns and artistry, along with herringbone patterns that add texture.

Overall, an increasing focus on clay brick craftmanship reflects a growing recognition for brick’s artistry and aesthetics.

Made from abundant natural resources, fired-clay brick exteriors offer tested superior durability, fire and moisture resistance, energy efficiency and performance in severe weather.

Topping Off at University of Maryland Shore Medical Campus at Cambridge Marks  Major Milestone

Another milestone has been reached at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Campus at Cambridge. The “topping off” ceremony was held on Monday, September 20, 2020. This event marked an important milestone in the construction progress for UM Shore Regional Health’s state of the art, freestanding medical facility that will serve Dorchester County and the surrounding area. While the COVID-19 pandemic precluded a traditional public celebration for the topping off, during the previous week, an open house invitation from UM Shore Regional Health to the community enabled scores of community leaders and local residents to come to the construction site to sign the facility’s top beam before it was lifted into place.

The project is on schedule for construction completion in summer 2021 with an opening date scheduled for mid-September. The new UM Shore Medical Campus, located at Cambridge Marketplace on Route 50 at Woods Road, will house a 39,000 square foot emergency care center with an adjacent helipad and a wide array of outpatient care, including physician offices, diagnostic and rehabilitation services, to the citizens of Dorchester County.

Repointing Completed On Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s Dodson House

As part of its commitment to future growth, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum recently contracted D.W. Masonry of Denton, Md., to repoint the brickwork of its 1800s Dodson House.

The current home of CBMM’s administrative offices, Dodson House was built sometime between 1851 and 1861 for the Dyott family. When Richard S. Dodson acquired the home in the 1880s, he expanded it slightly, raising the side facing the water and adding the spectacular triple porch on the water side.

The bricks were probably made locally, out of locally obtained clay, and like most 19th century brick, they were not fired at such a high temperature as modern bricks. They were originally mortared with a lime and oyster shell-based mortar, which likewise, is softer than modern mixes of Portland cement. Over time, exposure to the weather eroded some of the original mortar, and water can now seep through the brick walls, damaging the building interior.

With Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum President Kristen Greenaway and Vice President of Facilities Management Bill Gilmore are Tom Conneely, Dave Smith, and Brian Barnes of D.W. Masonry.

Shown above: With Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum President Kristen Greenaway and Vice President of Facilities Management Bill Gilmore are Tom Conneely, Dave Smith, and Brian Barnes of D.W. Masonry.

CBMM undertook a major rehabilitation of Dodson House in the early 2000s, but never completed the task of repointing the mortar between the historic bricks. Thanks to funds provided through a Maryland Bond Bill, and matched by donations to CBMM’s five-year comprehensive campaign, that project has now been accomplished. It was done according to preservation best practices so that Dodson House can stand for another generation and more.

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is a world-class maritime museum dedicated to preserving and exploring the history, environment and people of the entire Chesapeake Bay, with the values of relevancy, authenticity, and stewardship guiding its mission. To learn more or to support CBMM, visit
